Finding out about a career in law

How to learn about careers in law and how to meet us

Our two day workshops provide a valuable alternative to our longer vacation scheme. Our winter workshop is particularly beneficial to post-graduate and final-year non-law students looking to gain an exposure to life at Clifford Chance and test their career motivations to become a commercial lawyer. Our spring workshops have been designed for first year students, to help them gain an insight into the career of a commercial lawyer.

Workshops

Featuring similar case studies and seminars as well as time in two of our practice areas, our two-day workshops are a condensed version of our vacation schemes. They provide a great opportunity to experience working at Clifford Chance, to meet some of our people and to learn more about what commercial lawyers do.

  • Our winter workshop is aimed at final-year students from any discipline who have graduated or those who have graduated, but anyone is welcome to apply.
  • Our spring workshops are aimed at first-year students from any discipline.

What the students say

To find out what our students thought of our workshops, here are some comments from students who attended our most recent workshops.

'I particularly liked the way in which we were able to meet and speak with people from all segments of the firm - from partners to those who had just started I think it really helped to gain an idea of what CC was really about.'

'The Workshop was very informative. In particular I believe the case studies were a great opportunity to get a better insight into what different areas of practice really involve.'

'The wide range of sessions condensed into the two-day period gave a brilliant overview of the workings of the firm. An unfortunately timed tube strike meant that one of the talks on the second day had to be cancelled but I think the firm handled the situation very well and ensured that we did not miss anything else. The workshop was well organised and has definitely confirmed my interest in Clifford Chance.'

'Being with a trainee the first day and an associate the next worked out very well.

'The work-shadowing was extremely helpful and really made the workshop stand out from other open days by providing actual work 'experience' as opposed to mere presentations.'

How to make the most of your workshop - hints and tips

  • Get involved - meet people, introduce yourself, ask questions and look for opportunities to learn more. Talk to trainees, lawyers and other workshop students about their experiences. This will help you to build a more detailed picture of the firm and what a career in commercial law involves.
  • Come prepared - two days will fly past so make sure you are ready both to learn and to show your own abilities and talents. Prior to your workshop identify particular areas that you want to find more about. Remember, everyone here was once a newcomer and they'll be happy to answer your questions.
  • Listen and ask questions - this is your opportunity to learn about what a major law firm does and what the career entails. There will be a lot of information to absorb. Do ask if you wish to learn more of clarify something. You will find the people around you understanding and helpful and even if they can't help directly they'll be able to point you to someone who can.
  • Have fun - the vacation scheme isn't just about work, it's also about experiencing the culture of the firm and getting to know our people.
