Jason Epstein, a Law student from the University of Manchester, attended the Summer 2009 vacation scheme at Clifford Chance. He will commence his training contract with us in 2012.
Clifford Chance was an obvious choice when it came to applying for vacation schemes, because I wanted to experience life in a Magic Circle law firm with a global reputation and real expertise in the financial sector.
As Clifford Chance is such a large firm, the first day was particularly daunting, but everyone was so friendly and welcoming that any pre-scheme nerves disappeared very quickly. We attended a breakfast reception where we had the chance to meet our fellow vacation schemers. After a morning of induction talks, our trainee buddies gave us a tour of the fantastic facilities at the Canary Wharf office. We were then introduced to everyone in our department and settled into our new surroundings.
I spent two weeks of the vacation scheme in the corporate practice area in the London office and two weeks in Clifford Chance's Dusseldorf office, where I worked in corporate finance. Corporate work at a firm like Clifford Chance is exciting for anyone with an interest in business. From my first day, I was involved in cases involving some of the biggest names in the banking and insurance industry. I was made to feel like part of the team because I was always given work that really mattered.
I was very excited to be offered the opportunity to work in the Clifford Chance Dusseldorf office as part of the vacation scheme and I was lucky enough to arrive the weekend of an international beer festival! Another vacation schemer joined me in the Dusseldorf office and our limited grasp of German was not a problem because everyone at the office spoke very good English, and we were made to feel very welcome.
On top of the work, there were numerous practice area talks during the day and fun socials in the evenings so the four weeks really flies by. By the end of it, you already feel like part of the team, largely thanks to the friendly atmosphere at Clifford Chance.
