I always thought I'd be a Scottish lawyer and then realised that if I wanted to work across borders, English law was the way forward. I looked to get a job with one of the big English firms and become dually qualified. To convert, I was able to do a part-time course, which I did in the evenings.
During my training, I have worked on a number of big acquisitions, private equity buyouts as well as large restructurings. I've also worked on deals involving football clubs, which was quite glamorous.
I have loved Banking because Clifford Chance's Banking practice is the best in the City. It's amazing to be working with large clients on some of the biggest, most complex transactions. The most challenging time was recently when I was left to run a signing on my own – an accession of guarantor to a loan for a FTSE100 company. It was sink or swim, but I rose to the challenge and learned so much from the responsibility delegated to me. It wasn’t just closing the deal, I had to negotiate and manage four different work streams, while trying to stay organised and composed.
My final seat will be in Hong Kong, where I will be doing Banking again but in another marketplace. I definitely would like to work abroad after I qualify and I'd also like to do a client secondment – to understand how it all works from the client's perspective.
